"Smart or Beautiful?" by Frank Chimero

I was watching Blade Runner last night, and thinking about all of those ethical questions Decker asks subjects to try to weed out replicants. What if we did this to designers? I don’t think we’d do it to necessarily pinpoint who is a replicant because, really, there are no bad-guys, but more to…

The idealist in me says “beautifully smart”, but the realist says “smartly beautiful”. If I had to choose, as in feet-held-to-the-fire choose, I’d go with smart.

  1. fishfood answered: why are we agreeing on useful?

The idealist in me says “beautifully smart”,...realist says “smartly beautiful”.
  3. graphicsgirl answered: Smart. But I’m wondering how many of us immediately lean toward smart because it’s the “smart” answer…
  4. davidhuyck answered: Nice question, mister. I’d definitely go for smart - it lasts longer than beautiful. Also, beauty can be relative, while smart just is.
  5. jakepaul answered: I agree. Smart.
  6. dkeithrobinson answered: I think if I had to choose I guess I’d lean towards smart. Fortunately I can’t think of a good reason or excuse to have to choose. :)
  7. thegraveyard answered: Smart is indeed beautiful and while beautiful can be smart, too often it is not. I say smart.
  8. thetasteof answered: I read the question, deliberated, and said “smart!” then scrolled down, read “Smart IS beautiful,” and said aloud, “EXACTLY!”
  9. designlife answered: the word is smeautiful.
  10. jufemaiz answered: Smart too mate.
  11. karlis answered: smart!
  12. hunterpryor answered: I would choose smart. Smart has gotten me to where I am today and I don’t regret one moment of it.
  13. twistedfork answered: I’d go for smart. Everything done with smartness in mind becomes beautiful.
  14. nervousacid answered: Something beautiful needn’t be smart, but something smart is always beautiful.
  15. ableparris answered: Beauty is subjective. I’d choose smart.
  16. mumm answered: I would ask the client if they wanted smart and/or beautiful
  17. randallzaitz answered: smart. work that is intelligent is beautiful.
  18. iamintricate answered: I’m going to go with beauty. Once smart is figured out, it may lose its ‘wow’, whereas beauty can be timeless. Application dictates all…
  19. matthewtodd answered: I think both fit in the right context. Beautiful is often subjective, so if pushed… smart would be my inclination.

  21. porcupineschool answered: Smart. I used to think that as an artist I must be right-brained. Then a silly Facebook quiz told me I was left. It was a revelation.
  22. davidhoffman answered: beauty has an easier definable max. the smartness of something is limitless.
  23. gluebox answered: agreed with you on smart, because like you said, sometimes when things are smart they just work, and the resulting clarity is beautiful.
