When sending proofs off to a client, for any sort of job, I’ve come to terms with two facts. First, the client has to be a part of the design process. Their input is important. I just need to figure out different ways to parse it. Second, they can always return any concepts or proofs asking for more of something or less of something else.
So yesterday, as I sat working on the initial comps for a book cover, I had those two things in mind. Thinking I had a pretty good idea which one they would approve, “of course they will choose the one that most closely matches what they had said they wanted.” The client had sent some specific imagery ideas and I had found an image that fit that. But, being that I’m not happy with just giving the client what they think they want, I had a few other ideas that I thought spoke to the book as well. So I tossed those into the mix happy with them all. I had a favorite, but I knew they would choose the cover that most closely matched their initial request.
A few hours later, much to my surprise, they chose my favorite. Wow! Lesson learned. Have some faith in your clients.
