Type. Typography. Design. History. Travel. Music. Movies. Food. Friends. Family. Love. Not always in this order.

Grids do not exist in a vacuum. They exist in relation to the content. We never start with a grid. We start with an idea which is then translated into a form, a structure.

Linda van Deursen (via arstype)

It is a nice idea to start with a grid. I try to do it. But as the content starts flowing in I find reasons to break the grid—or tweak it. Trying to design grid first is like designing a geometric sans on a grid. You’re going to end up with a horsey design unless you loosen up a little and allow for—in the least—optical correction from time to time.
